Chuka Umunna MP with young parents

Chuka Umunna was elected as Member of Parliament for Streatham in May 2010, becoming the first MP for the constituency to have grown up in the area. On St Michael's, Chuka, pictured left with two of your young parents, says:

Tessa Baring CBE

Tessa has a long involvement with St Michael’s joining as a trustee in 1974, becoming part-time director for seven years and later Chair of Trustees until she retired in 1999. Tessa is much respected for her vast knowledge, wise counsel and experience of the voluntary sector. She is a former Chair of Trustees of Barnardo’s, the Baring Foundation, the Association of Charitable Foundations and a Trustee of the Mental Health Foundation. 

John Coleman OBE

John Coleman is a psychologist whose primary interest is adolescence. He is the Founder of the Trust for the Study of Adolescence (renamed Young People in Focus) and was the Director of the organisation from 1989 until he retired in 2005. From 2005 to 2006 he held a post as a Policy Advisor in the Department of Health, and since October 2006 he has been a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford. In 1991 he published Growing Up Fast: Adult Outcomes of Teenage Motherhood a piece of research that followed the experiences of teenage mothers at St Michael’s Fellowship. This was one of the first British studies on this topic. John is currently a Trustee of Parenting UK.
