Praise for St Michael's Cookery Class

We recently delivered a six week cookery course to some of our parents here at St Michael's.
On week one the young people worked with group facilitators to decide how the course would be delivered. The overall decision was to cook food from around the world, where parents from different backgrounds would be able to incorporate and include their own experiences or recipes, including a mum who introduced a recipe from her Czechoslovakian background - Fried chicken and potato salad. Other recipes chosen were:

  • Pizza and fruit tart from Italy

  • Mousakka and Salad from Greece

  • Caesar salad, Macaroni cheese, Caramelised chicken wings, fresh fruit salad, quick fruit tart and fresh lemonade for an international mix

  • Chicken wings, burgers, chips, coleslaw and milkshakes from America

The group was extremely successful and everyone had a great time and learnt some important new skills. The feedback from some of the attendees emphasises this.

"I really enjoyed attending these cooking sessions. I struggle a lot at home with cooking a different variety of food so coming here and actually making different foods using different ingredients. I also love the fact that we get to take the actual recipe home and try it ourselves. I hope we can do these sessions all the time."

"I really enjoyed these groups I learnt how to cook new dishes from all over the world. I will be making nearly all the dishes again. I really rely on this group to keep socialise with other mothers and also for my son to play with his peers as we don’t have a lot of money to spend on recreational activities so we ty to come to all low cost / free days out."

These statements show not only how helpful learning new cookery techniques and recipes were but also the group enabled parents to socialise and enjoy themselves. We were very happy with the outcome of our cookery group and hope to deliver a similar group again in the future!
