Molly, a history student at the University of Sussex, has just finished her summer internship at St Michael's. Here is what she had to say about her time here:
My 8 week internship has flown by at St Michael’s. This internship provided me with an interesting and varied role whilst allowing me the freedom to come up with my own marketing ideas. It has also given me a valuable insight into the charity sector and the impact of St Michael’s on the people it works with.
A large chunk of the internship was focused around helping the fundraising team prepare for the September volunteer and #nappyhappy campaign. I was able to be involved from the start; brainstorming name ideas, coming up with social media posts, spreading the word to local businesses and schools. This allowed me to see how a campaign can be created even with the challenge of a very small budget. Although I won’t be there to see the outcome of the campaign it has been great to be a part of it, and I know it will be a success.
Other tasks I did included: creating leaflets, videos, and information packs for the website; scheduling regular social media posts, via Hootesuite; transforming toolkits into a digital format; creating data maps using Kumu; and conducting and writing up interviews with both professionals working at St Michael’s, and young parents benefitting from its services.
I was able to learn more about St Michael’s work, and the importance of smaller local charities, through visiting the different services SMF have on offer. On Friday’s I went along to the young parents group and on some of the summer trips. I met the young parents and was able see and hear first-hand how valuable St Michael’s outreach services were for both the parents and their children.
I was also given the opportunity to visit the residential houses to understand the full impact of St Michael’s work. In just the few visits I did, it was clear that St Michael’s is really changing lives and I hope it can continue to do so for years to come.
Because St Michael’s is a small charity they offer a wide-ranging and rewarding internship which allows you to understand the importance, as well as see the impact of working in the charity sector. You feel like a valued member of the team and are given the opportunity to gain valuable skills to help strengthen your CV and further your career in both marketing and communications, or the charity sector.
A big thank you to all the staff for being so welcoming, and for giving me an insightful and diverse internship.
