Aaron was first referred to our Caring Dads programme by his social worker following allegations of domestic abuse within his relationship to the mother of his four children, as well as concerns around substance misuse and the welfare of his children.
Aaron had initially begun the programme last year, but he was unable to complete it after suffering a heart attack and then later being arrested. The seven sessions Aaron had completed left a lasting impression on him and once he had recovered from surgery and was later released from prison, Aaron re-referred himself to Caring Dads.
“I really wanted to complete the programme from start to finish. I felt grateful to be able to start it again. I was ready and willing.”
Before joining Caring Dads, Aaron had considered group therapy but was unsure whether he would feel comfortable opening up in front of others. Instead, he found a supportive, non-judgemental environment where he felt able to be honest.
“The more I opened up, the more helpful I found it.”
Through the programme, Aaron began to recognise the impact of his own childhood experiences and unresolved trauma. For many years, he had struggled with drugs and alcohol without receiving support. Caring Dads helped him understand how these experiences had influenced his behaviour, while encouraging him to take responsibility for his actions and begin building a healthier future for himself and his family.
For a period of time his eight-year-old daughter had been experiencing persistent stomach aches. It wasn’t until participating in Caring Dads Aaron was able to identify the causes.
“The stress of what was going on at home and issues at school were causing my daughter’s stomach aches because of all the anxiety she was experiencing.”
Hearing other fathers speak openly about their experiences, and hearing different perspectives, alongside tools such as the Child Development Wheel, helped Aaron see how children’s wellbeing can be deeply affected by conflict, amongst other life stresses, such as difficulties at school. He learned practical ways to remain child-focused and support his children.
Today, Aaron’s goal is to build a positive co-parenting relationship with his partner to create greater stability for his family.
When asked what kind of father he wants to be, Aaron’s answer is simple:
“Someone who’s always there, ready to listen without judgement.”
Aaron’s advice to other fathers considering Caring Dads:
“I’d 100% recommend it. Be open, be honest and take each session as it comes. It helps that the facilitators are really good and understanding.”

“Aaron was a committed and valued member of the group. His journey is a testament to the growth that’s possible with this programme.” – Bez, Caring Dads Facilitator
